# Recommendations

> Our recommendations for hardware and related solutions.

An overall distinction should be made between marine and on-road vehicles.

## Marine solutions

Commonly, marine telematics devices should meet the following criteria:

* **Waterproof**: IP67 or higher rating.
* **NMEA2000 support**: For integration with marine electronics (larger and newer vessels).
* **Low power consumption**: To avoid draining the boat's battery during periods of inactivity.
* **Antenna or device placement**: Depending on the size and build of the boat, external antennas may be required for optimal GPS and cellular reception.
* **Auxiliary sensors**: Such as water detection (bilge monitoring) and mains detection (shore power monitoring).

The Astra Telematics AT241/242 is suitable for most marine applications, due to its compact size, NMEA2000 support, and cost-effectiveness.
For larger vessels or more advanced use cases, the Teltonika FMC640 is a robust choice with enhanced features (similar NMEA2000 support, external antennas).

## 2-wheelers

For 2-wheeler vehicles, the following criteria are important:

* **Compact size**: To fit the limited space available on motorcycles and scooters.
* **Vibration resistance**: To withstand the harsher conditions and vibrations experienced on 2-wheelers.
* **GPS accuracy**: Enhanced GPS capabilities for better tracking and navigation.
* **Low power consumption**: To minimize battery drain, especially on vehicles with smaller batteries.

The Astra Telematics AT241/242 is suitable for motorcycles and scooters, as it offers a good balance of size, features, cost, and OBD2 support.
For a pure OBD2 solution, the Teltonika FMC001/003 is a convenient option, allowing for easy installation and removal.
Note that in this case, the device is powered via OBD2 port, which prevents the device from being used as a theft deterrent when the vehicle is off - on the other hand, installation is very simple, does not require any wiring, and does not drain the vehicle's battery when parked.

<Note>
  With Euro5 and Euro6 standards, many modern motorcycles now support OBD2,
  making the FMC001/003 a viable option for a wide range of bikes.
</Note>

## Other on-road vehicles

For other on-road vehicles, such as cars, vans, and trucks, the following criteria should be considered:

* **OBD2 / FMS support**: For easy installation and access to vehicle data.
* **Plug-and-play**: Simple installation and configuration.

The Astra Telematics AT241/242 with an OBD2 adapter is a solid choice for general vehicle tracking, due to its compact size and cost-effectiveness.
For more advanced use cases, such as fleet management or vehicles requiring additional features, the Teltonika FMC130/230 or FMC640 are robust choices with enhanced capabilities (FMS integration, external antennas).
